Hurtado Posts Career High 23 In 75-61 Loss To SUNY Cobleskill

AURORA, N.Y. – Junior Jonathan Hurtado (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a career high 23 points in a 75-61 loss to the Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill Saturday afternoon at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing. With the loss, the Express fall to 7-12 overall on the year and to 3-6 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Fighting Tigers, of whom the Express had defeated in eight straight games entering today, improve to 5-13 overall and to 3-5 within league play.

In addition to 23 total points, Hurtado registered a team-best four takeaways alongside three assists, also a team-high mark. Junior E.J. Taylor (Tampa Bay, Fla.) posted 12 points, ranking second on the squad in that category. Classmate Jonathan Bonds (Chicago, Ill.) secured a career-high 15 total rebounds against the Fighting Tigers, scoring 10 points for his first career double-double.

The Express opened the game with a bang as freshman Jordan Bishop (Arlington, Texas) countered an Alexis Nunez jumper with a three-point basket only 35 seconds into the contest to open a 3-2 lead. However, the Express would not see the score in their favor for the remainder of the contest. The visitors were able to open up a 14 point lead with 7:59 remaining in the first half, courtesy of a Will Davis three-point basket to bring the score to 33-19 SUNY Cobleskill.

With SUNY Cobleskill carrying only a seven point lead into the half, the Express were able to chip away at the 47-40 lead to begin the second half of play. A Bonds layup preceded a Hurtado three-pointer with 17:07 remaining in regulation, cutting the lead to two points. However, with 2:54 remaining in the contest, Nunez utilized a layup to place the Fighting Tigers comfortably ahead by 21, 73-54, with time ticking away.

The Fighting Tigers converted 5-of-14 attempts from the perimeter as Wells has allowed their opponents to shoot 34.6% or better from three-point range in four of their last five games. They have also allowed five or more three-point baskets in seven out of their last eight games. During that span, the Express have only two victories to their credit.

Both Nunez and Tyrone Mitchell posted 21 points for SUNY Cobleskill, as the former posted nine free throws while the latter converted nine field goal attempts. Nunez also posted eight assists while Mitchell was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.

The Express return to action Sunday, Jan. 27 as they host the Wildcats of SUNYIT in a 2:00 p.m. contest at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing.
