(Harrisburg, Pa.)─ The Wells College men's basketball team's bid for a comeback win came up short as the Penn. St. Harrisburg Nittany Lions held on for the 101-94 victory in a decisive North Eastern Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon in Harrisburg, Pa. The two teams came in tied for first in the NEAC with a 12-4 conference record. The victory by Harrisburg (13-10, 13-4 NEAC) gives the Nittany Lions a one game lead over the Express (13-11, 12-5 NEAC) with one game to play for both squads.
Andre Sawyers (Bronx, N.Y./Mt. St. Michaels) led the Express with a career high 28 points and 10 rebounds. NEAC Player of the Week Terry Harrison (Brooklyn, N.Y./Forest Hills) added 22 points and seven rebounds, while Benito Perez (Crystal City, Texas/Crystal City) chipped in with 17 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Deavan Kelly paced the Nittany Lions with 26 points and five rebounds. Shane Woodman added 20 points, while Kenton Alston finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds to round-out the scoring for Harrisburg.
It was a back and forth game that featured runs and cold streaks by both teams. Leading by two (30-28), the Nittany Lions would take the first significant lead of the game, going on an 18-4 run to open up a 16 point lead (48-32) late in the first half. The Express rebounded just before the end of the half, going on an 8-0 run to trim the lead to seven (53-46) entering the break.
The Nittany Lions continued to lead in the second half, including a 90-80 lead with under four minutes to play. The Express would twice trim the lead to three with fewer than two minutes to play but, the Harrisburg defense held strong in the final seconds to secure the victory.
The Express will conclude their regular season play tomorrow against Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. The game is set to tip-off at 2 p.m.
