Wells Baseball Hits The Win Column Against Hilbert

The Wells College baseball team picked up the first win in program history as part of a doubleheader split at home on Saturday, March 25 against Hilbert College. Wells won the first game of the day 7-2, and Hilbert won the second game by a score of 8-2.

Wells is 1-6 on the season and Hilbert stands at 5-6. The Express will play two games Sunday, March 26 at home against D'Youville College beginning at noon.

Wells 7, Hilbert 2

The Express made program history by getting the first win in the existence of the newly-established varsity program at Wells College. The big hits for Wells were a two-run homer in the bottom of the second by Brandon Shirley to give the Express a 2-1 lead, and a

Hilbert came back to tie the score 2-2, but Wells scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to get the victory. In the fifth, Wells loaded the bases with one out and Mike Diehr delivered a sacrifice fly to score A.J. Nesci. Shirley followed with an RBI single to score Tyler Young and Dylan Nolan scored on a wild pitch. Insurance runs in the sixth came on an RBI ground out from Nesci and Justin Forster scored on an infield error.

Jared Strait earned the win on the mound. He worked six innings with nine strikeouts and just one hit allowed. He walked two batters. Both runs he allowed were unearned. Greyson Avots pitched the seventh inning and had one strikeout.

Hilbert 8, Wells 2

In the second game of the day, Wells took a 2-1 lead in the early innings with single runs in the second and third innings. Anthony Aumick had an RBI single in the second and Dylan Nolan delivered an RBI double to score Greyson Avots in the third. Hilbert took the lead with two in the fifth, added one in the sixth and sealed things with a four-run seventh.

Aumick and Avots had two hits each to lead the Wells offense. Aaron Wintermute took the loss on the mound. He worked six innings and had six strikeouts. Garrett Gagnon pitched the seventh inning.
