AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's basketball team posted a 64-54 loss to the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton Sunday afternoon at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing. With the loss, the Express have lost four straight contests (1-5) while the Kangaroos improve to 4-2 following the non-conference game.
The Express jumped out to an early 10-5 lead with freshman Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) accounting for six of the team's 10 points at 13:26. However, the Kangaroos scored the game's 13 points, unanswered, to take a 18-10 lead with 9:11 remaining in the first half. Across that span, Alicia Uhlein scored seven of the team's 13 points.
In the half's final 13:26, the host team was only able to score seven points, including only two in the final five minutes. This allowed the Kangaroos to build an 18 point lead entering halftime. Uhlein led the way with 14 points for SUNY Canton, with Tricia Boland and Kaitlin Myers accounting for nine points apiece. Boland was 3-for-3 in the half, burying all three of her opportunities from beyond the arc.
With the SUNY Canton lead reduced to 13 with 13:14 remaining in regulation time, the Express were able to further chip away at their deficit. An Achzet free throw preceded layups from Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) and Theresa Hernandez (Dewitt, N.Y.) to bring the Kangaroos lead to eight points at 12:43. An additional Hernandez two point shot came via a layup with 10:46 to bring the score to 41-35 Kangaroos, but the Express could not break that six point lead down any further for the remainder of the game.
Cumulatively, Roser led the way with 17 total points to her credit, burying all seven of her free throws and leading the team with 13 boards. She remains one of only three players in program history to accomplish this feat – Jessilyn Artaho-Aki (Kapaa, Hawaii) and Jordan Peterson have each recorded perfect days at the free throw line.
Freshman Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) posted five field goals, a career-high mark, and recorded 14 points on the afternoon. Achzet ranked third on the team in scoring, chipping in nine points following a 4-for-11 performance in the field. Hernandez posted a career-high mark of seven steals in this afternoon's contest.
For the Kangaroos, perimeter shooting proved to be the difference maker. In total, SUNY Canton was 9-for-18 from three point range. Boland capped off her day with a 5-for-6 performance from beyond the arc while Joelle Percy buried 3-of-7 opportunities from three point range. Uhlein led the way with 20 points, shooting 8-for-13 from the floor and burying a team-best four foul shots.
In a pre-game ceremony, Roser was honored with a personalized game ball in commemoration of her 1,000th career point. She became the first women's basketball player at Wells to record her 1,000th career point, accomplishing that feat in the second half of the game against the Saxons of Alfred University this past Saturday.
The Express return to action Tuesday, Dec. 4 as they host Nazareth College in a 5:00 p.m. contest.
