(Morrisville, N.Y.)─ The Wells College women's basketball team fell in the final seconds 44-42 to SUNY Morrisville in North Eastern Athletic Conference action Wednesday evening in Morrisville. Jenna March hit the game winning shot with 29-seconds remaining to give Morrisville the conference victory. The loss drops the Express to 3-18 (3-16 NEAC), while the Mustangs improve to 5-16 (5-13 NEAC).
Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y./Camden) paced the Express with a game high 26 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks. Kristen Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Rachel Mattraw (Chaumont, N.Y./Lyme Central) chipped in with four points and nine rebounds to round out the scoring for Wells.
Nijee Scott led the Mustangs with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Nijah Townsend added 10 points and seven rebounds for Morrisville.
The first half would be one to forget for both teams. Wells shot just 13 percent from the floor and Morrisville finished 18 percent from the floor. Despite the cold shooting from both teams, the Mustangs would hold a slim six point led (19-13) heading into halftime.
Things turned around for both teams in the second half. Morrisville came out and quickly built an 11 point lead. Despite the large deficit, the Express continued to battle. Roser scored 12 straight points and a timely 3-pointer by Ryan tied the game at 39-39 with 4:44 to play. Defense took over from there as both teams combined to score eight points over the final four minutes of play, including the game winning shot by March with 29-seconds remaining.
The Express would have a chance to send the game into overtime but two missed free-throws would end any last second comeback as the Mustangs held on for the win.
The Express return to action on Saturday afternoon against NEAC opponent Penn. St. Abington with the game set to tip at 1 p.m. in Aurora.
