(Aurora, N.Y.)─ Sarah Allen (Clay, N.Y., Cicero-North) scored five goals and one assist and Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif., Helix) added four goals and one assist to help the Wells College women's lacrosse team hold off a late rally by the Medaille College Mavericks on Friday evening in Aurora, N.Y. The Express improve to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) West Division, while the Mavericks fall to 1-2 (0-1 NAC).
Courtney Grosser (Penfield. N.Y., Webster Schroeder) added three goals, Stefanie Miller (Barton, N.Y., Tioga Central) finished with two goals and one assist and Anna Breard (Biddeford, Maine, Biddeford) chipped in with one goal and three assists to round out the scoring for the Express. Liz Barclay (Laporte, Pa./Lincoln) earned the victory in net finishing with six saves.
Medaille was led by Taylor Hackford (Hamburg, N.Y., Frontier) with two goals and three assists, while Michelle Kemp (Rochester, N.Y., Gates-Chili) and Marilyn Meyer (Rochester, N.Y., Gates-Chili) each had three goals. Chris Balestracci took the loss in net finishing with five saves.
Wells College held the advantage in ground balls 14-10 and shots 29-24 including 2 of 2 on the extra player opportunity.
The Express dominated in the first half outshooting the Mavericks 20-8, including 3 of 3 on free -position shots while also going 9 of 10 on the clear. Breard scored 18-seconds into the first half followed by two quick scores by Allen and Miller to take a 3-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. Medaille cut the lead to two (4-2) but Wells finished strong taking an 11-4 lead into halftime.
The second half proved to be a completely different story as Medaille held the advantage in draw controls 10 to 3 and outshot the Express 16-9 for a 7 to 4 goal differential. The Mavericks did most of their damage early in the second half trimming to lead to four (12-8) but, two late goals by Allen allowed the Express to seal the victory (15-11).
The Express take the field again on Sunday, April 3 in a conference matchup against Wilson College at 1 p.m. in Chambersburg, Pa.
